“Ivy…”
“Amos, there is no investigation,” I insisted. “I can’t possibly be tampering with evidence if there isn’t a case. And besides, I’m not going to hurt the doll. She will still be in one piece.”
“Even if I agreed with you, that doll can’t tell you anything. It’s just a toy.”
I set Opal back on the counter. “Maybe. Maybe not. You know, either Chuck held on to her for a long, long time, or he bought her recently.”
Amos got up off his stool and walked around the breakfast bar to the coffeemaker. He picked up the pot and poured himself another cup. “You think you can find out where he got it? It could have been anywhere. How could you possibly track something like that?”
“There’s only one way I can search all over the world in just a few minutes.”
“The Internet.” Amos frowned at me. “I don’t know. Chuck didn’t look like someone who knew how to use a computer, let alone own one. Besides, he could have gotten her almost anywhere.”
“Well, I guess I’ll know in a few minutes if you’re right.” I glanced at the wall clock in the kitchen. “What time are we leaving?” I hadn’t decided whether to open the store today, but although I doubted Zach’s book would be at the post office, I felt like I needed to check. And I knew Amos wanted to fax Chuck’s picture to Cecil.
“After I shower and change,” he said. “Do me a favor, okay? Until we see where this is going, be careful where you touch the doll. Stay away from any spot that could have fingerprints.”
“Shoot and bother, Amos. You make it sound like this is the crime of the century.”
He sighed. “Just do it, Ivy. I mean it.” He shook his finger at me and then left to go upstairs.
I picked Opal up by her sweater, careful to keep my fingers off her plastic skin, and headed toward the corner in the dining room where my computer sat on a small antique writing desk that had been in Aunt Bitty’s bedroom. I opened the top of the computer and turned it on. Then I waited. Although I didn’t miss much in Wichita, I really wished Winter Break had DSL.
While I cooled my heels, I stared at the painted tapestry that hung on the wall over my desk. Painted years ago by Marion and left in the house when they moved to Florida, it depicted one of the skating parties she and Cecil used to host. Amos and I skated hand in hand on the frozen pond while Aunt Bitty watched from one of the wooden benches Cecil had built and put up around the lake. They were great for lacing up skates, but many older people loved to just sit and watch the children having fun. Aunt Bitty waved at me from one of the benches. She held a book in her other hand. Emily sat next to Bitty, and Buddy Taylor stood in front of her, offering her a cup of hot chocolate.
